Having concentrated heavily on the standard type clutch for many years which is suitable for normal road use, Solid Auto has now extended its portfolio and introduced a range of Exedy performance sports clutches. Mitsubishi Evolution II-VIII, Subaru Impreza, Toyota MR2 and Supra, Honda Civic and Integra are among the faster moving applications, but the range includes normal type, carbon based single, twin and triple plate clutches for a multitude of Japanese sports models.
Japanese O.E. supplier Exedy (known as Daikin in the clutch aftermarket), has developed an Exedy range of sports clutches to accommodate a variety of motor sport applications. Unlike some sports clutch suppliers who offer an up-rated standard clutch, Exedy manufacture their sports clutch range specifically for sports applications with each component being tailored to meet particular driving conditions. The distinctive pink packaging highlights the difference between a genuine sports clutch and a standard/up-rated component.
Due to the complexity of sports performance clutch types, make-up and wear differentials, the racing clutch program can appear some what daunting. Broken down into basics, clutch types fall into categories suitable for street, circuit, drift, rally (including group ‘A’ and ‘N’) and production car racing vehicles. The sports ‘normal type’ series consists of thick type metal disc and clutch cover (plus optional lightweight flywheel), with a selection of specific clutches for street (Organic), street/racing/rally (S Type) and (R Type) suitable for on road competition racing that requires good shift response. Both the Organic and S Type covers are designed to achieve a 40% higher clamp load than the original genuine part. The R Type consists of a thinner disc, reducing the overall weight, together with a reinforced matching clutch cover.
The sports range then extends into carbon single, twin, triple plate and compe-R clutches. The carbon series enables an improved shift feel and clutch operation, whilst the multi plate configuration offers a light weight, durable clutch resilient to high heat, contributing to an improvement in track times. As we see the increasing popularity of track days and the new craze 'drifting', heavy duty sports clutches are becoming an invaluable product for the motor factor sport specialist.
